Getting Back Into the Swing of Things...Sort of...

My lack of posting is mainly due to the reality of being home and having to live "real life" again. Its much harder to slip away for an hour or so to post at home. Plus, at the hospital I'm not responsible to do dishes or wash laundry (whew, thank goodness, that's got to be one sick job!).

Our weekend has been good. Relaxed. Which is exactly what I think we all needed. I was in bed by 10:00pm on Friday night and slept until 8:00am. I was wiped. We all have been. Abbi was down for a nap by 11:30am and 12:15pm on Friday and Saturday. Definitely not normal behavior around these parts.

I think we kind of oopsed but quickly learned our lesson. On Saturday we went for a picnic at a park close to our house. I suppose the first sign was when I was getting the kids dressed to go and they both fell asleep right on Abbi's bed. No warning, nothing, just two konked out kids! Once we got to the park (after their mini-naps), Abbi wanted to look at the ducks, the geese, the pond, etc, etc. Normal 2 year old behavior. I think the thing we didn't realize is that she will do it, even if she's tired or sore, and she likely won't complain. So we let her walk around and check everything out. We left an hour or so later.

When we got home, she napped from 3:30pm until 7:00pm. We finally went into her room at 7:00pm and tried to wake her up. Nothing. She was OUT! It took us almost half an hour to get her out of such a deep sleep. We were sitting on her bed, having a full conversation at a normal volume and she still wasn't even stirring. So I suppose she could have just needed a good nap, but I'm guessing that we just completely wiped her out. Yikes!

I was telling my Mom this, and in my Mom's usual matter-of-fact manner she said, "Well, generally most people aren't touring the park a week after heart surgery." Oh. Well, when you put it like that, yes, it sounds fairly dumb on our part! So we definitely learned that we need to take it a bit more easy. And although she really is showing very few clues, I think we kind of need to also set some boundaries for her.

To be honest, if it weren't for the scar, and the gazillion medicines we wouldn't know that anything was different with her at this point. Its just mind-boggling how fast she has bounced back. Thursday and Friday she was fairly wobbly on her feet, but by Saturday she was buzzing all over the house and up and down the stairs. This evening she was climbing on Rob, as if he was a jungle gym - usual behavior. Unbelievable!

The medicines take a bit of getting used to. She takes about 3 syringes (full of liquid) every morning and night, plus two pills in the evening. The pills seem to be the tricky part. Last night we had quite the showdown over the pills. She basically wouldn't chew or swallow them, but just left them in her mouth. So she was just drooling everywhere. Tonight we got smarter and put them inside cheese cubes. You could see she was a little confused why there was little hard pink things inside her cheese, but happily ate it anyway. I might be onto something...

Tomorrow we are heading back to the Stollery for our 10 day post-op appointment. They will do another echo, EKG, SATs. Not sure what else. I imagine listen to her heart, perhaps the dreaded blood pressure. I find it kind of odd seeing as how we had all of these things done 7 days post-op, but I guess the 10 days is just standard. But if you got out on day 9, would they do it anyway? Hmm. So hopefully it goes smoothly. She was getting pretty good with this stuff by the end, and remarkably cooperative. The best part was her saying "Bye" to all of the nurses. Sometimes they would barely be halfway into the room and she would already be saying Bye!

A fun aside from hospital stuff. Ruth (Gammy) and Dave dropped by today and gave us their old BBQ. Its 10 years old or so, so its a bit quirky, but 10 times better than our current BBQ...which doesn't actually doesn't exist. So we were quite excited to get this, and we even used it tonight. Rob did roast potatoes, chicken breasts, and roasted onions. Sooo delicious! I also picked up a Delonghi espresso machine at a garage sale for $10. Its 12 years old, but I know its a good name, and I'm hoping Barista-ing is just like riding a bike. It will all come back to me!
Homemade Caramel Macchiatos here I come! Mmm, delish!

  1. My mom used to grind up my pills and mix them w/ a teaspoon of honey. When else does your mom ask you to eat a spoonful of honey?! To this day I still like it... (minus the pills, of course). And then there's the same concept w/ yogurt. Just in case she wises up to the cheese trick or there are some other adverse affects to eating chese on such regular basis ;) - you can always mix it up a bit.

Glad to hear things are well at home!

  2. Yeah, our cheese trick only last 24 hours! Last night she knew something was up with her cheese. So we did yogurt, but I'm sure yogourt will be ruined for tonight. Honey...sounds good!
