Garage Sale Bargains
I finally have a little time to post about my Good Friday garage sale-ing. It was a tremendous succes, in my opinion! Most stores are closed, it was the first real garage sale day of the year, people like me are itching to get out and get a good deal...yup, a good day to have a garage sale!
The first garage sale was in the back alley. So Abbi and I did a drive by. The homeowners were sitting in lawn chairs in their garage, heads on their hands, slumped over, looking bored out of their minds. Hmm, nope. Keep on driving...
The second one looked much more organized. They had signs up, and balloons everywhere. Yup, this was a gooder. The eldery parent's had to move into a home, so the kids were left to sell everything they couldn't take with them and eventually sell the house. The kids seemed to have a good attitude about it. They priced things to sell, which worked for them because it cleared out the house, and it worked for me, because I got some GREAT deals!
This wicker lamp came from the last garage sale we visited. I love its shape, and it goes perfectly on top of my TV hutch. Plus, at $1, how can you go wrong?
The bird house was also $1, and I think its absolutely adorable. I'm not entirely sure about the bright yellowness of it, but its kind of fun all at the same time. This will make its way to our backyard...once it stops SNOWING!!! Yes, that's right, its snowing here in Edmonton today...is this a cruel, cruel joke?
I've been wanting a table for my "craft room" for quite sometime. Its not really a craft room yet, but I have visions! Its like a craft room/pantry. Anyway, the table only cost $5, it also has a leaf that goes into it. Rob had to come back later so it could fit in his hatchback. I didn't really think that it wouldn't fit in the car until we got it to the car...oops! What a good husband I have!
And then when I realized the table wouldn't fit, and Rob was going to have to come back anyway, I decided to buy this cabinet for the so-called craft room. I'll paint it white, and probably paint the craft table white as well. It too was $5, and they would both easily fit into his car. I mean he was already making the trip...
I would have to say this was my best deal of the day. I always say I plan to take up quilting when I get old, like in How To Make An American Quilt. But even as a non-quilter, I know that this was more than just a good deal...it was exceptional!
The rotary cutter (still in package), the cutting mat and the ruler (both never used)...all for...get this...$5! Whew! I put it in my pile, and within seconds a lady was trying to grab it. Thankfully the home owners put a kibosh on that, and said they were already taken. I heard her mutter under her breath as she walked away. Eeek!
Remember how I mentioned a few posts ago that the tool area needed a little "lady love." Well, this was one small step for woman (this woman anyway). I found this storage unit at the third garage sale for $5. It doesn't entirely deal with the tool chaos, but it sure helps. Plus, it easily comes apart.
I have wanted an old steamer trunk for quite some time. This isn't exactly what I wanted, but I think its definitely cute, and I just love that it says "Roy." We used to buy a kind of dog food for our Dachshund called "Ol Roy." Plus, the blue color is kind of funky. I'll likely end up painting it, but I couldn't resist. Total cost $2.
This second trunk is a bit of a mystery to me. It looks very old. Made out of some sort of metal. The latch is broken, and its got some good dents, but its in fairly good condition otherwise. I had thought of painting it, but my MIL says that it looks like the original finish, and I probably shouldn't. So I will be doing some trunk research trying to date it and see if it has any real value. Technically the current value is $1. But believe me, I've got plans for this trunk!
I got a few other things, including a giant snow globe with little snow men in it. They sing Christmas carols and it blows the fake snow around. Abbi was mesmerized by it at the third garage sale, and I figured for $2, I should probably get it. I also got a cool old wine carafe for 25 cents. So total money spent? $28. Now that's my kind of morning!
Woah - that rotary cutter is amazing! If only... And I love that big ol' brown trunk. One day I hope to own many awesome old trunks (perhaps to function as a symbol of the travellers within us all?). Anyways, good finds!
ReplyDeleteYeah that quilting stuff is really expensive! Good find! That's incredible.
ReplyDeleteI like the tin little lunch box thingy. "Roy." haha.
Oh the tin, I'm guessing you mean the trunk. Its fairly large. I'm sure I could stuff Abbi in there if I really wanted...and well, those days where its "I love you, you love me" over and over for 8 hours straight...well...
