I've seen the ad for the H&W Produce in our local newspaper for a long time, but always figured the produce must be junk to be so cheap. Because really, how on earth can they charge exactly half (in some cases) what my good 'ol local Safeway is asking? Well, I still don't know the answer to that one, but I do know now that the produce is the exact opposite of junk! Its good quality produce, at excellent prices.
So all of ya'll Edmontonians, I'd encourage you to check it out, and save a buck or two (or three) while you are at it. They have locations on the South side, Unit 31, 9261 34 Ave (where I went), as well as on the North side.
Here's my loot.
Look at the size difference in the zucchinis. H&W's on the left, Safeway's on the right.
H&W price $3.22
Safeway's price $2.24
H&W price $3.22
Safeway's price $2.24
I also bought some pitas that they had for sale (the only non-produce item).
Large pitas $2.25 for 6.
Small pitas $1.75 for 6.
Some price breakdowns (can you tell I'm excited???).
Bananas:
H&W $1.33 per bunch
Safeway $2.71 per bunch
Romaine lettuce:
H&W 79¢ per head
Safeway $2.99 per head
Kiwis:

Safeway 69¢ each
Avocados:

Safeway $3.99 per 10lb bag
Onions:

The actual receipt so you can see (I hope) a better break down of the prices.

Believe me. Some awesome produce deals going on there. The store is bright and clean, well staffed. And the best part? The tills still have those little turny things. Love it! But as I drove home, I realize, I have a lot of cooking to do this week to actually use up all of this food! Thankfully things like potatoes and onions keep for a long time, but I'm excited to have so much green goodness now stocking my fridge.

With Zucchini, the smaller the better (and more expensive). So on that one, Safeway would appear to have given you the better deal.
ReplyDeleteDo you guys have a "Good Food Box" program in Edmonton? It's this awesome program that allows you to get produce really fresh (like before they go to the grocery store) for a really good price (because they buy in bulk, have subsidies, volunteer run, etc). Every two weeks it gets delivered to your door. The only bummer is that you don't get to choose what you get, but it is always a variety of fruit and veggies. It's for families of all incomes, but you pay more if you are mega rich (don't you wish it was like that in more places?).
So there you go. I love the Good Food Box! Ours is run out "Hunger in Moose Jaw", but sometimes they are run out your local food bank.
I'm proud of you for buying so many fruits and veggies. How's the cleanse going?
