The Patch.

Yup, its true. We Nepper's have a wee little garden patch. Considering we are in a townhouse, I'd say its a reasonable size. Not like we'll be feeding ourselves all year from it, but it's still fun nonetheless! And its also a great way for the kids to see how food actually grows. Like other than at Safeway...

These tomato plants were $2.10 each and around 10" tall when I bought them. I'd say we did well for our money...now that they are well over 5 FEET TALL!
*In front of the tomato plants I have a row of radishes and a row of carrots. There's also some Swiss chard in there, just for kicks. Its quite smushed I know, so we'll see if we get any results.

This little guy is specifically for pots. Looking rather sad currently...
...because we enjoyed his spoils a few days ago. Mmm, mmm, good!
In addition to our tomato bounty, we also have one zucchini plant, which has rather purdy flowers. As well as two strawberry plants which some lovely lady gave to each of the kids when we were at the nursery once.
My favorite garden friend is the rhubarb. Seriously, it's one of my favorite looking plants. I'd say if rhubarb could be human, she'd be a flamboyant, larger than life woman with a name like Della! She just lets it all hang out!
And I'd heard this rumour about planting potatoes in the ground, you know, the ones that get all gross and sprouty. As if that really works...
OK, I'm seriously a believer now! These suckers have gone mad. I put 4 potatoes in the ground, and look at the madness that has ensued! Probably in the 4 feet high range. I'll have to get in there, again, and try to contain these bad boys.

Unfortunately, the potatoes aren't too into sharing because they seem to be smothering my poor pepper plants (one red, one yellow). You can see one sad little pepper on there, hanging on for dear life, praying for some sunlight.
I also have a happy little herb garden. I think its fairly adorable, and I do love that this planter was $5! I've got some Stevia (a natural sweetener), chives, basil, oregano and parsley.
In addition to foodie type plants, I also have some pretties in the backyard. "My" garden is on the opposite side of the step (Rob considers the veggie patch to be his). Its kind of gone wild and crazy with our wet, wet, wet summer. I've got Hollyhock, Irises, Daylilies, Variegated Ornamental grass, Columbine, Campanula and a Mum.
Can you tell I love my perennials?
I also picked up these lovely hanging baskets at a garage sale for $5 each. I had to buy the coconut liner, but I'm pretty much in love. And the fuchsia reminds me of my Mom. Every Mother's Day we would buy her one. And no, she is not dead, she just lives too far away for me to buy her a fuchsia anymore ;)
I picked up these cute hooks at Walmart for $1.97.
This bird house was from the legendary garage sale last year. I think it was $1. The yellow makes me happy. No bird has decided to move in yet, but its so cute it doesn't even need a bird to live in it for me to like it!
And finally, I have a fairly exciting yard feat to share. I have never mowed the grass. Ever. I'm not even sure I've ever operated a weed wooter.

*And yes, I know they are normally called weed eaters or weed whackers or something of the sort, but I like weed wooter. And this is my blog, so weed wooter it is!

So anyway, our grass was getting to offensive heights, and with all the rain, I think our long grass was just creating the perfect mosquito habitat. So I finally told the husband he needed to show me how to operate one of these blasted contraptions!

So it took some getting used to, and my forearms weren't too pleased with me, but I now have cut grass, and I'm quite pleased with my attempt. Not too shabby...
So that's a little Nepper's Landing backyard tour for you. The best part is that you got to see it from the safety of your house and not get eaten alive by the crazy amount of mosquitoes we have in this neck of the woods!

  1. So cool how much stuff you're growing! So proud of you! Do you know how long the growing season in Edmonton is?
