Oh folks, my university days are all coming back to me. The late, late nights, although in my older years I find I'm trading those late nights for early mornings. The feeling that I have a textbook permanently attached to some part of my body. Dreaming of Durkheim, Marx, Kolhberg's Theory of Moral Development, social contracts, and well...the Lower Canadian Rebellion of 1837, just thrown in there for good measure!
I'm halfway done my two weeks of craziness and believe me, I cannot wait for all of this to be done! Not like I will be done, done, but at least done my History course. The timing of it all has really stunk, but I think it will pay off in the end.
Tonight is my Criminology midterm. So I've been busy studying for that. I just have half a chapter left of flash cards to do, then its time for review. I plan to review while playing on the floor with the kids, during nap time, and while making dinner. Am I am bad person if I even review while on my way to school at the red lights? ;)
Once I finish the midterm, then I need to switch my brain back to History and study my buns off for my History final on Saturday. That one, I'm not feeling it as much. Seeing as how I can't even get above 75% on an assignment really makes me nervous for my final. Oh well, I'll take anything over 70% (which is what I believe you need for UVIC to accept the credits).

In other Nepper news, we had a weekend of sick kiddos. Mainly Abbi. Gabe was off, but thankfully didn't get it as bad as Abbi. Apparently there is a stomach flu going around. No fever, but lots of vomiting and diarrhea, as well as not wanting to eat. So Abbi threw up around 5 times over the course of 3 days. Now please realize this Mama don't do vomit! You can poop to high Heaven, but vomit is my limit.
So on Wednesday afternoon when Abbi was sitting on the couch facing me, (I had my legs down the couch and she was sitting between them) and she started vomiting, my first instinct was to run! She proceeded to face me and vomit a total of 3 TIMES all over me. Rob said it was very maternal of me to sit and just let her barf all over me. But the truth? I realized that if I moved, it would run down behind the couch cushion (it was pooling between my legs...yes, utterly delicious...). So in those short few seconds I had to rationalize it all, I figured I could have a shower, but there was no way I was going to be able to clean puke out of the back of my couch.
So yeah, not exactly maternal...perhaps materialistic instead? Regardless, my lovely pleathery, brown couch does not smell like puke. It was one easy wipe, and voila...ready for another round. After this experience I will strongly recommend pleather to any up and coming parents!
So by Friday Abbi just wanted to lay on the (*puke free*) couch and just watch TV. Or lie in Mom and Dad's bed. I definitely remember how lovely it was when I was a sick kid and getting to hang out in Mom and Dad's bed. A definite treat. I will admit I was a little concerned for my king-size down duvet, but I figured that would be a heck of a lot easier to dry clean than a couch.
So that made for a laid back weekend. Rob and I went on a couple of walks with the kids to let them some fresh air and some sunshine (because yes, the sun was shining in Edmonton this week. Above zero temps in March, amazing!). Yesterday, both kids actually fell asleep during the walk. Incredible really.
So it looks as though Abbi is on the mend. We kept her out of church yesterday. And by last night she was starting to get back to her sassy self (a sure sign of health and wellness!), and pushing Gabe around again.

Next week is a busy one for me. Not so much with school stuff. But new exciting experiences. First of all, I am supposed to have my first "knitting lesson" on Wednesday night. We'll see how it goes. Lately, I feel like my head has no room for any additional non-school related information, but we'll see how I do. Although I will have to miss about half of the lesson because...
I am meeting my maternal Aunt for coffee that same night! My first biological family member meeting! I'm beyond excited, and tempted to skip the knitting altogether really. She is my Mom's youngest sister, Charlene. She lives in the NWT, but her family is away on vacation right now for Spring break. They are flying in and out of Edmonton, so on their way back home, they are staying one or two nights, and we will get to go out for coffee! How fabulous to finally get to meet one of "my people."
I find it terribly funny that she is my "Aunt," but she is only 36, a year older than Rob! But I suppose my Mom did have me when she was 15 (so Charlene was 7-8 years old). Last night it occurred to me that this will be my first outing where someone could possibly say something like, "Wow, you look so much alike." Not like I really expect anyone to say that, but even just the thought of it blows my mind. Charlene was also kind enough to send me some pics that she dug up of my Mom. At this point I had only seen one picture of her, so its always nice to see some more.
In this photo Sheri around 26 years old, so just a few years younger than I am now. I really see her in my half-sister Tara. Beautiful isn't she?
This is a shot of my Mom and her siblings. She is 2nd on the left. The Aunt I am meeting is on the far right.
I'm hoping to get some pictures while out for coffee, and I'll post them afterwards.
Hope you all have a great week!

Who's teaching you knitting? I've totally enjoyed learning how to knit this winter. I find it so calming and meditative as well as super cute when you find that you've actually knitted a sock or a bootie. Also, I can't wait to hear all about the meeting with your aunt! A biological connection! Also love the photos that you posted. I completely take for granted that I can see resemblance in my parents and that you've never had that! Thinking of you this eve.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this entry! It is so full of wonderful, meaningful events. I LOVE the name Pig for the Guinea Pig! I think you should stick with that! I love the penguins and the knitting. I am SO happy that you had the chance to meet your aunt. That must have been incredible! I can't say I know how you feel, but I love hearing about it! As for the issue with the Residential Schools, I think that the apologies that have been given are beyond lame. It was truly horrific and evil what went on. But what do you think is the solution? How can the people involved ever be helped in their healing? What should be done and how we can advocate that it is done?
ReplyDeleteTake care Beautiful Woman!
Cindy
Not sure what happened but the above comment was supposed to be in the March 18 entry!
